Introduction:

ANGKOR translated from the Sanskrit Nagara was the first capital of ancient Khmer Empire between 9th and 13th centuries or we can call previously Yaśodharapura built during the reign of King Yashovarman I.The water system as giant water reservoirs and canals were built to supply water the capital and irrigate the rice fields. The infrastructure of small and big roads was flourished across the Empire up to the North, the West and the East. Thousand of bamboos and wooden traditional Khmer houses were constructed to provide a home to around a million Khmer people whereas many large brick, sandstone and laterite templeswere dedicated to the Hindu gods and Mahayana Buddhism. At the Angkorian period, Cambodia has reached to the highest point which the temple’s bas-reliefs are proof evidence for everyday lifestyle of Khmer people. Modern researches by satellites have revealed Angkor to be the largest pre-industrial urban center in the world.

But unfortunately, the thriving Khmer Empire was in decline and the capital was abandoned in 1432 by the Khmer Monarchy, Ponhayat and moved to another place to build a new capital. Subsequently, Ang Chan 1st, another Khmer King reigned at Longvek came to hunt the elephants and discovered the ancient capital of Angkor buried in the jungle by chance.

After moving from Angkor, the Khmer Kings have changed many sites of capital and finally selected Phnom Penh area next to the Mekong River to establish the last capital and build their Royal Palace faced towards the East and situated at the Western bank of the four divisions at the Mekong River called Tonlé Chaktomuk.

It is not only protected areas for wildlife species like Asian elephants, tigers, stags, wild boars and gaurs but also these mountain ranges are an important site for the conservation of endangered birds, including the giant ibis and the greater adjutant and are peaceful paradise of tribal minorities.

Sihanouk Ville is the only deepwater seaport and major tourist provincial town south of the country because it has beautiful white sand beaches.
